What to look for in a Gaming keyboard?

Strategy Aug 30, 2022

To choose the right gaming keyboard, know what size you need and check for key technology, key rollover, key customization and macros, and backlighting.

Overview:

  • The gaming keyboards competitive players use are engineered for high performance and reliability, even after years of heavy use.
  • Good features make a keyboard stand out but do little to improve your experience.
  • A right keyboard is an essential tool in a gamer’s arsenal, and a purpose-built gaming keyboard goes way beyond letting you hunt and peck.

You must have all the necessary equipment to succeed as a modern gamer. You'll need a top-notch gaming keyboard with your great gaming setup if you have a high-end gaming PC and mouse.

Technology has advanced significantly, particularly with the gaming industry's rapid expansion. Gamers today have many keyboard options to suit their gaming preferences, thanks to an overabundance of high-quality goods from various manufacturers.

Things to look for during Keyboard Shopping

There are several factors to take into account while choosing the right keyboard. You'll want to be certain that the keyboard you choose meets your demands, given the wide variety of keyboards available nowadays.

Different keyboards do various tasks. Do you like using bigger keyboards when you play video games? Do you appreciate easy-to-reach keys and macros? Or maybe you're just a casual player who appreciates ergonomics and comfort. Here are a few things to consider while selecting your new gaming keyboard.

Size

You may have noticed that keyboards come in different sizes. This is particularly true with laptops since the screen's size matters most. When a keyboard includes 104 or 105 keys, including the complete QWERTY area, number pad, specialised function buttons, and the four directional cursor keys, it is referred to as "full size."

The most extended style, full-sized keyboards can be too big for your gaming surface. Because the number pad might seem like it creates too much space between the keys they use with their left hand and the space for their mouse, some gamers choose to go without it. On the other hand, you should choose the full-sized keyboard if the number pad is important to you.

A "tenkeyless" size is the best option if you decide to forgo a number pad. All the necessary keys will still be there, but they will be much smaller and easier to handle. For most players, the "tenkeyless" size is ideal.

Gaming Keyboard and Connection

Both wired and wireless keyboard connections are available. The most popular kind of keyboard is a wired keyboard. With these keyboards, you won't need to constantly check the battery level to ensure that the computer won't suddenly go dark and disrupt your game.

Two different types of wired connections exist:

  • The widely used USB slot: This connection method has a few downsides despite being widely used. If the USB bus got overcrowded with additional connections, you may encounter delays in hits, which would be a major problem. The second issue is that having a USB connection limits the number of simultaneous hits.
  • Better connections exist, such as the PS/2, but they are difficult to find since they are no longer in use. This connecting mechanism enables simultaneous impacts, producing a strong reaction.

You'll have more flexibility to play the game anywhere you want with a wifi connection, but you'll still run into problems keeping your device charged.

Mechanical vs Membrane

The inner workings of the keyboard are the second factor. By that, we mean how the keys feel and sound when pushed, as well as how they detect that they have been pressed. Under each key, most standard commercial keyboards use a kind of "membrane" technology.

Thanks to the layer of rubber or silicone that serves as both the "spring" and the electrical contact, membrane-based keyboards are simple to produce and permit extremely thin designs. Although membrane keyboards are quite flexible, they often lack a noticeable "click," making it difficult to tell from a tactile perspective whether you've truly depressed the key (and registered that press with the computer). This spongy or squishy feeling and a little key travel are insufficient for gamers' demands.

Mechanical keyboards are somewhat reminiscent of keyboard layouts from the past. There is a specific mechanical switch under each key, which is often significantly taller than modern keys. These switches produce a click that is both loud and tactile, or "clicky," according to some. They have their housings, springs, and stems (you can feel the moment the mechanism connects with the electrical contact). Depending on how much "click" or none at all you want and how much spring resistance you want, mechanical key switches come in three basic forms.

If you don't already have a mechanical keyboard, you should get one if you take gaming seriously. Not only are they more accurate and provide greater feedback, but they are also far more durable than ordinary keyboards. Most mechanical keys may last between 40 and 50 million clicks before needing to be replaced.
