A fresh Warzone game is in the works and all about it.
Activision's Call of Duty video game franchise is a first-person shooter. It began in 2003 with a concentration on World War II-themed games. The series has included games set during the Cold War, futuristic planets, and deep space. Infinity Ward created the games initially.
According to Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the official title of the next game in the Call of Duty series.
The game's logo was shared on the developer's Twitter feed, together with the hashtag #ModernWarfare2.
Activision already stated that the next title would be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare, and this is the first time the title Modern Warfare 2 has indeed been formally confirmed.
Infinity Ward originally hinted last week that it was planning to reveal the game.
Last week, the Activision studio 'went dark' on social media, replacing its profile pictures and banner with what looks to be utter darkness.
When the photographs were enlarged, they revealed what looks to be the outline of the cult hero Ghost, who first debuted in the classic 2009 Modern Warfare 2.
The campaign of Modern Warfare 2 will be centered on the war against drugs and the Columbian cartels, as initially revealed by VGC in September of last year.
According to sources, the single-player game is "a dark and gritty version of the Modern Warfare 2019's narrative," with more close-quarters action, challenging decision making, and the typical Call of Duty set-piece events fans have grown accustomed to.
Activision stated earlier this week that a fresh Call of Duty: Warzone game is in the works and will be released later this year.
The news appears to be part of Activision Blizzard's Q1 2022 financial reports, which stated that the new Warzone would be constructed from the ground up with the new Modern Warfare.
"In their first quarter, the Call of Duty teams made considerable gameplay upgrades for Vanguard and Warzone," Activision said in a statement. "Development on this year's premium and Warzone adventures is progressing quite well, led by Infinity Ward."
"This year's Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare, the most successful Call of Duty product yet, and is the most refined experience in franchise history," says the publisher.
If Ghost appears in the future game, as Infinity Ward hinted at last week, he may not even be played by the same actor who played him in the last game.
Jeff Leach voiced Ghost in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019, however, Activision has confirmed that he is no longer connected with the game following the resurfacing of a series of misogynist statements online.
