NODWIN Gaming, an eSports startup, has partnered with Star Sports Network to broadcast the Battlegrounds Mobile India Masters Series live on Indian television for the first time. From June 24 through July 17, the competition will be shown during prime time.
Vision from NODWIN
“There have been deferred broadcasts of Esports tournaments from the US on television channels, but this is the first time an Indian eSports tournament is being broadcast live on television,” said Akshat Rathee, co-founder and managing director, of NODWIN Gaming.
In India, linear television is the traditional means for viewers to witness the action when a programme is broadcast on a specific channel at a specific time, but eSports are often broadcast on digital platforms such as Hotstar and YouTube.
“Our aspiration is to change the behaviour of advertisers, big brands and parents, who feel very proud of the fact that their kids are now on national television. There is a value to being on Star Sports rather than on YouTube,” he added.
According to Rather, the big e-Sports competition averages 300,000 to 1 million concurrent viewers on digital channels, resulting in a per-match viewership of 5-7 million. He does not anticipate the internet audience watching the event on television. Rather added, "We anticipate adding additional viewers."
Targets for this project
Viewers in tier 2 and tier 3 cities are being targeted by the startup. As a result, the first two languages to be broadcast live are Hindi and Tamil. Rather explains that English is the third language.
According to Sanjog Gupta, Director of Sports at Disney Star, eSports in India is a rapidly rising segment that has witnessed rapid growth in the previous two years.
"Star Sports is constantly on the lookout for new ways to engage fans, galvanise communities, and attract new audiences. "Our collaboration with NODWIN Gaming aims to define the future of eSports in India by bringing high-quality competition and notable players to millions of Indian television fans," Gupta added.
