Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired the Helsinki and Berlin-based Savage Game Studios to adapt PlayStation games for mobile devices.

Overview:

  • The Savage Game team will join PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which operates independently from its console development division, to focus on “on-the-go gaming.”
  • Earlier this year, Sony announced that it wants half of its games to be on PC and mobile by 2025.
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan stated that it could result in a “significant growth in the number of people who play our games.”

Sony has established a PlayStation Studios mobile subsidiary that will function independently from the creation of console games as part of its drive into the mobile gaming market. The new company will create mobile games leveraging "new and current PlayStation IP," according to a press statement.

Following the company's overarching objective of extending its intellectual property to PC and mobile games, as well as TV shows and films, Sony decided to establish a mobile gaming branch. Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan said earlier this year that the company's announcement that 50% of its games will be accessible on PC and mobile devices by 2025 might result in a "substantial rise in the number of people enjoying our Play games."

Sony has acquired Savage Game Studios, whose co-founders previously worked at Zynga, Insomniac, and Wargaming, to fill out its new mobile division. It doesn’t look like the studio hasn’t launched any games yet, but it did raise $4.4 million for a mobile shooter game last year. The press release expands on that a bit, noting that the studio is currently working on “an unannounced new AAA live service action game” but doesn’t offer additional details on what to expect.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, said the company is “proud” of its “upcoming releases on PC,” which should give gamers without a Playstation console the opportunity to experience games like Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and Marvel’s Spider-Man. “Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more opportunities for more people to engage with our content,” he said, “and seeking to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games.” “

More and more major gaming companies are trying to bring their games to mobile, a tactic that has proven profitable for some studios. In June, data from Sensor Tower showed that the mobile version of Genshin Impact grossed $154 million, with PUBG mobile and Pokemon GO just behind. Take-Two entered the mobile market with the acquisition of Zynga in January, while Activision is planning an acquisition of Call of Duty Warzone on mobile phones.
