Sony may be working on its PC game launcher

Newsroom Aug 18, 2022

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered was recently released for PC, and apparently, it has references to some things that Sony could be working on.

Overview:

  • Sony may be developing its PC games launcher akin to Steam and the Epic Games Store for use with its range of PlayStation PC re-releases.
  • Sony also recently said that, alongside investing in first-party software, its other primary strategy for growing its business is releasing its software on multiple platforms.
  • It expects to make $300 million from PC games this year alone.

According to rumors, Sony is working on a separate PC launcher that will supposedly be available soon. Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered was just published for the PC, and the game's files included references to a "PlayStation PC Launcher." According to a previous claim by Video Game Chronicle, Sony may add and incorporate PlayStation Network compatibility into its PC titles.

Spider-Man Remastered reportedly had references to "PSNAccountLinked" and "PSNLinkingEntitlements,” according to a report by XDA Developers confirmed by Video Game Chronicle. Additionally, according to the article, the corporation may someday let players to cross-purchase titles for the PS5 and PC.

The importance of a PlayStation Network account for playing games on a PC

According to the article, desktop players may explore Sony's PC games without a PlayStation Network membership. Players cannot, however, move their saved game data from a console to a PC. The PC versions of PlayStation games do not sync trophies with the server without the PlayStation Network, although they do give achievements. According to the article, this might alter shortly to improve convenience for PlayStation and PC customers.

Sony's PC games are available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. However, the suggestion of a distinct PlayStation launcher leaves the prospect that Sony may sell its titles in a walled garden, similar to Activision and Bethesda. Since PlayStation titles are currently available on Steam, I predict Sony will offer a launcher that acts as a middleman, much like Ubisoft's Ubisoft Connect, which has a separate user profile and displays whenever you open one of its games from Steam or Epic.

The revelation of a reference to a PC launcher comes soon after a story of a similar finding suggesting that Sony may be getting ready to allow PC players to connect their PlayStation Network accounts to their games, with in-game rewards available for those who do so. Once again, this would be consistent with the incentives Ubisoft provides via Ubisoft Connect.

In the last two years, Sony has released five first-party exclusives, strengthening its position on PC:

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (Aug 7, 2020)
  • Days Gone (May 18, 2021)
  • Predator: Hunting Grounds (Apr 29, 2021)
  • God of War (Jan 14, 2022)
  • Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (Aug 12, 2022)

How Sony has changed its gaming business strategy

The publication claims that Sony has been more forthcoming recently, as seen by the release of several console-exclusive games on PC. Due to competition from other competing businesses like Microsoft, the corporation was compelled to change its business strategy. Since then, the firm has made some of the most sought PlayStation games available to PC players, including God of War, Days Gone, and Horizon Zero Dawn. These titles are now available from Sony through digital stores like Steam and Epic Games.

Sony first published the Marvel's Spider-Man video game in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, and it was then re-issued as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered for the PlayStation 5 two years later. Since its release, the game has sold over 30 million copies, and before this, Sony was not required to split a portion of its revenues with PC distribution firms like Steam which takes 30%, and Epic Games, which takes 12%, according to the source.

According to the source, a "great financial potential" may be anticipated for the corporation by publishing its games on PC; therefore, watching how Sony moves forward with its gaming business plan will be fascinating.
