"The kids receive a coach that not only knows the games and is a fantastic Esports player in general, but also understands that what we truly want to accomplish is see kids grow and improve," Douglas said. "We're interested in the kids as individuals, not just gamers. That's why our phrase, 'We construct characters, not avatars,' means so much to us."
Although Douglas is now the league's president, Esports was once an alien concept to him. As his nephew Vanderwal entered the gaming industry, he realised the advantages. Douglas also mentioned the disadvantages of possible isolation. Like social media, Douglas said that Esports isolating and severely harming a child's development prompted him to start XP League Omaha.
"XP League is striving not just to enhance the benefits of Esports, but also to combat isolation," Douglas said. "We want to place (the kids) next to their teammates, right next to their coach so they can communicate in person rather than simply online."
In addition to possible isolation, home gaming has raised numerous safety worries among parents about their children connecting with possibly hazardous strangers. This was a serious concern for Omaha parent Kimberly Dow.
Dow took her 8-year-old son, Levi, to the grand opening, where he could play Fortnite, his favourite game. "He's quite into gaming, and I believe being part of a team with a coach would be a far better experience for him than simply sitting in the basement playing with people he doesn't know," Dow said.
Levi said he had been playing since he was four years old and came to the league to learn how to improve his skills. Thus far, he's stated he's a pro and hasn't required many recommendations, but he believes the instructors will be useful.
Douglas said he wants to bring enthusiastic kids gamers through their homes and out of isolation so they can continue learning life skills, win or lose. "At the end of the day, if a child is on a team and they lose, as long as we see improvement for that kid's growth, it's a win for us and, I believe, a win for the kid," Douglas said.
