IOC confirms Singapore as host of first Olympic Esports Week in June 2023

On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially announced Singapore's first E-sports week location in 2023. According to the IOC, the four-day competition will occur between June 22 and 25. The Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth, Sport Singapore, and the Singapore National Olympic Committee will work together to organise the event.

The inaugural Olympic Esports Week represents an important milestone is their aim to encourage the expansion of virtual sports within the Olympic Movement, IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement after the announcement. Early in 2023, information, including how to participate in the first Olympic Esports Week and Olympic Esports Series, will be made public.
Olympic Esports in Singapore
The International Olympic Committee announced that Singapore would host the first Olympic Esports Week from June 22 to June 25, 2023. (IOC). The news represents an important step in attracting gamers and encouraging the development of virtual sports inside the Olympic Movement. In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Sport Singapore, and the Singapore National Olympic Committee, the Olympic Esports Week is a four-day festival showcases the newest technologies, panel discussions, educational sessions, and show matches. It will highlight the best virtual sports, including hybrid physical and simulated sports (SNOC).
The innovative new structure of their virtual sports tournaments, which will include live finals for the first time, is a chance to work with Esports players even more closely and to open up new prospects for both players and viewers. They are excited to collaborate closely with Singapore, which has a history of fostering innovation within the Olympic Movement and is hosting the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in 2010, so this partnership is ideal, he said.

Ng Ser Miang, a member of the SNOC Board and the IOC Vice-President, said the Singapore NOC supports the Olympic Movement's goals to explore the growth of virtual sports. They are thrilled to work with the IOC to realise this common ambition since Singapore has a history of hosting some of the largest virtual sports and Esports Calendar events. Esports was dropped as a medal event from the Commonwealth Games 2026 earlier in October. There were no concrete explanations offered as to why it was taken away. However, rumours indicate that doping may be a factor considering that testing every game and player proved difficult.
As Esports was suggested as an official medal event at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) 2025, fans and players were unhappy with this choice but still wanted to see video games on a larger scale. Fans are optimistic that the inclusion of Esports in the Olympics in 2023 would give the athletes another opportunity to succeed. India just took home a bronze medal in Birmingham's first Commonwealth Esports Championship, and fans are hoping for much more from them in the next competitions.
