Inside the race to compete in Valorant, the next big Esport

Newsroom Jul 28, 2022

In the future, a new in-game competitive mode will give every player a chance to feel what it's like to compete like a professional and an opportunity to work.

Overview:

  • In 2023, create three worldwide leagues for North American, European, and Asian regions with a restricted number of spots designated for organisations who apply for "partnerships" with Riot Games.
  • It's becoming more common for the competition for a "Valorant" partnership spot to be played out on social media, as interested clubs rally their fan bases and put out material to show their reach and influence.

What will a squad take to make it into the next big e-sports organization? Sure, a successful track record. However, solid finances, engaging websites, and even dazzling displays on the top of SoFi Stadium, which can be seen by travelers descending near LAX, might also have an impact. In April, game developer Riot Games stated that the esports environment surrounding its tactical first-person shooter "Valorant" would change from an open tournament format to a closed league system. Overhauls are planned to begin in 2023 to create three worldwide leagues for North American, European, and Asian regions with a restricted number of spots designated for organizations who apply for "partnerships" with Riot Games.

While a few North American teams have made it to the finals of the partnering process, a larger number have decided to drop their rosters and stop participating in esports altogether. According to reports, there are just eight to ten spots in the American League for teams wishing to compete at the top level. Spokespersons for Evil Geniuses and Version1 confirmed that both teams had progressed to the next application round. A nondisclosure agreement prevented Marco Mereu, XSET's co-founder and COO, from disclosing what the group had heard from Riot. However, Mereu stated he was "not disappointed." As reported by Dot Esports, many other teams, including Sentinels and TSM, have advanced in the application process. It's becoming more common for the competition for a "Valorant" partnership spot to be played out on social media, as interested clubs rally their fan bases and put out material to show their reach and influence.

Valorant is a major Esports upliftment

However, The Guard, a Los Angeles-based non-profit, went above and above the call of duty. For their part, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, owner of many other professional sports teams and venues in the Los Angeles area, showed the "Valorant" emblem alongside the one for The Guard from atop SoFi Stadium. The team hired a helicopter for their application to fly above and take exhibit photos. "For us, it's an indicator of what we can accomplish in the future," said Alex Rubens, senior vice president of esports at Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. Rubens said that the Guard is hoping to connect with Los Angeles residents.

Thus, the SoFi Stadium and YouTube Theater owned by Kroenke were unique selling features for the team. "It's up to Riot to decide where their events will be held. Rubens stated, "We certainly believe those two locations are fantastic sites for them." As part of their application, the Evil Geniuses brought some team paraphernalia to Riot. There was also an interactive website where Evil Geniuses employees, shown in cartoon form as "Valorant" agents, narrated the substance of the presentation in addition to the check-the-box materials (a slide deck and booklet). Mockups of prospective branded items and goods are also available on the site. It also shows what Evil Geniuses has planned for "Valorant" content providers.

What Valorant organizations have to say?

A team's ability to compete in-game, create content, and attend media days are all important considerations for Riot as it narrows down its list of potential "Valorant" partners. But the financial performance of organizations is also an important consideration. At the same time, LaPointe Jameson said, the developer wanted an excellent commercial and competitive product. LaPointe Jameson laughed when he remarked, "I believe EG is in contention as a squad that could be more boring in certain respects." In the long run, "that boringness guarantees that we will be a reliable and stable, and brand-safe and ethical organisation in five to ten years." While franchised leagues charge entrance fees, partners will get a yearly stipend from Riot in exchange for participating in their league. Even XSET applauded the developer for taking that route. Even though they were losing money hand over fist, some owners in other leagues with $25-$35 million buy-ins, according to Mereu, felt good about being in this elite league that other people could not afford. "XSET Valorant would never have been if Riot had released Valorant in the same manner that [Activision Blizzard] introduced Overwatch League," says the developer. This is a crucial aspect of the value offer that was put out by XSET and almost every other partnership candidate. Only two North American teams qualified for the Masters Copenhagen event following a tough season that included open qualifications, group games, and an eight-team playoff bracket. By developing their players rather than just purchasing the most costly ones, Mereu said, they could achieve success. It's important to remember that winning isn't the sole factor. Competitive set (clothing and lifestyle companies like Supreme and Nike) and financial health were emphasized in XSET's application, a 60-page digital book.
