Sony will release a virtual reality (VR) headset for its PlayStation on Wednesday, six and a half years after its first effort to break into an industry still failing to garner a significant public following. The gadgets have sometimes sparked great enthusiasm in the geekier reaches of the tech and business worlds, with Facebook's $2 billion acquisition of start-up Oculus in 2014 igniting a mini-boom.

Yet media speculations have floated that Apple is ready to reveal its version, a move that fans eagerly anticipate. According to CSC Insights, less than 10 million units will be supplied globally in 2022 across all brands. On the other hand, Sony claims to have sold 30 million PlayStation 5 systems last year. For now, VR headsets are prohibitively costly, and the rapidly evolving technology soon becomes obsolete.
Yet this hasn't deterred Sony
"Based on feedback from our initial model, we believe now is the ideal moment to provide a new, more technologically sophisticated headset," said Nathalie Dacquin, PlayStation's marketing director in France. So, can one of tech's behemoths bring a persistently specialised product into the mainstream?
The PlayStation VR2 outperforms its predecessor; it is lighter and shows crisper, more fluid pictures. However, the price of the Sony device will not revolutionise the market, coming in at $550. The Quest 2 by Meta and the PICO 4 are two of the market's flagship devices priced at $400.

Furthermore, PICO 4, developed by ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, is unavailable in the United States. The PlayStation, however, gives Sony an advantage over the competition, and approximately 30 games, including the racing simulator "Gran Turismo 7," will be compatible with the new headset. "These are obviously the games that will ensure the success of the headset," Dacquin said.
Experts do not expect a revolution to occur anytime soon
According to Rick Kowalski of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organises the CES tech show in Las Vegas, more companies with products in various price ranges could help shake up the market in the long run. "Over time, competition and economies of scale tend to bring prices down," he said. However, there are still numerous barriers to widespread adoption. According to Rolf Illenberger of VRDirect, a consulting firm, technological advances rapidly render the devices obsolete.

Customers who purchase flashy headsets "tend to be quite disappointed" when they discover a few months later that a new generation has already been released. Their version is no longer properly supported, according to him. He believes that headsets are still best used in technical and corporate environments. "Aside from gaming, it does not yet provide a sufficient content lineup for people to be drawn to this technology consistently," he said.
