Ericia Turner, the athletic director at CMS, stated they had seen the strength of Esports and the good comparisons it can have with regular varsity sports in my own family. They have felt making the start of this unique league throughout CMS a priority would allow them to harness the potential of reaching these kids where they are while also transmitting the tremendous lessons of communication, leadership, and cooperation varsity athletics can give. Nearly 100 of the more than 500 CMS students who registered to compete in the first league were chosen to represent their respective schools at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Club levels. Additionally, weekly contests will be expertly prepared and live-streamed on Twitch with Esports commentators.

Riley Fields, the Carolina Panthers director of community relations, stated, They are thrilled to be a part of this endeavor to promote Esports and STEM opportunities for children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Their community's efforts are mainly focused on education and youth football. Esports offers kids many opportunities for growth and development as conventional sports do by stressing leadership, sportsmanship, and communication while competing in a team-building atmosphere. Additionally, the growth of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) abilities may lead to new and distinct career paths and avenues for higher education. Each high school will perform tasks to improve the students' expertise in high-value STEM fields and the Esports tournament. Like the Rocket League matches, the STEM challenges will be aired on the same Twitch channel as the Esports tournament and assessed by industry professionals head-to-head.
According to Toni Hall, CTE CS and IT Pathway Lead for CMS, In CMS, at the middle and high school levels, they provide STEM via Career and Technical Education (CTE), a program that prepares students for high-wage, high-demand employment. They have observed how pupils react to games and competition in their capacity as an educator and parent. Using students' interests in sports and video games, the Varsity Esports & STEM League will enable them to reinforce STEM principles taught in their CTE classes. This software will transform the game. Five regular-season games will be played in the inaugural season, and then there will be playoffs and a championship. Providence vs. Palisades (5:30 p.m.), Hough vs. South Meck (6:15 p.m.), East Meck vs. Charlotte Engineering (7:45 p.m.), Ardrey Kell vs. Williams Montessori (8:30 p.m.), Olympic vs. Garinger (9:00 p.m.), and Hopewell vs. Phillip O. Berry are some of the Week 1 game (8:30 p.m.).
According to Dustin Swinehart, Charlotte FC Director of Community Engagement, supporting this initiative is a logical next step for our club. Charlotte FC has been involved in Esports since signing Khaled Ali as our first eMLS player in 2021. Providing increased opportunities for upward mobility is a pillar of our community programming, Swinehart said. They have witnessed firsthand how popular Esports are becoming and how important it is for young players to develop essential social and academic abilities. Esports competition and STEM learning curricula go hand in hand, so we're happy to provide CMS students more access to these initiatives.
