EA is patenting a way to generate content based on play style

Newsroom Jul 21, 2022

EA has filed a patent for a new system that generates game content depending on a player's 'persona,’ or how they play the game.

Overview:

  • EA is making a new system that would produce game material based on how a player behaves in the game.
  • Using the player's persona, the system can compare it to the average persona of other gamers.

According to a recent patent application by EA, a new system would produce game material based on how a player behaves in the game. Ads and in-game material will be based on player 'personas' recognized. As long as these traits are consistent with the player's persona, they will likely suggest a game to a gamer. Using a game's content-creation algorithms to develop 'custom content' depending on a player's play style is another example in the patent application.

"Persona Driven, Dynamic Content Framework" was filed in March and made public this month by Exporter, which cited the patent. According to the description and supporting graphics, the patent involves a system that "determines the identity of a player based on information about the user's gameplay." Afterward, it may, for example, "conduct dynamic content production or new product suggestions depending on the player persona."

The example graphic shows how a game may determine a player's "persona" based on game choice. Examples include explorers, competitors, collectors, supporters, fighters, tank/leaders, commanders, and finishers. Once the player's persona is identified, the system may refer to it when picking data to deliver to the player. A good illustration of this is the suggestion of other games. Using the player's persona, the system can compare it to the average persona of other gamers. The chance that a player will like a game is increased if the characters they choose reflect the player's personality traits.

Aside from recommending games, the system may also impact in-game content, such as randomly generated material. Other examples in the patent application include a player's personality being extracted and combined with game content-creation algorithms to develop "user content" depending on the player's play style. According to the patent description, the player's personality may be utilized "to customize the gaming to move it closer or farther away from the prior experience." In other words, games may leverage the player's personality to ensure they receive the stages or item drops that best fit their play style. It may even be the other way to force players out of their comfort zone and present them with more significant difficulties.

Five of EA's previously filed patents that increase player accessibility were shared with the public last year. An EA "patent guarantee" stated on the publisher's official website grants any other game developer permission to freely utilize up to five of the publisher's patents (and maybe more).
