Beginning their adventure in the Play-ins, the fourth-seeded LCK underdogs, DRX, added another surprise upset to their string of victories. Following their qualification for the Knockout Stage, they beat the Worlds 2021 winners, Edward Gaming, by a score of 3-2 in the quarterfinals and Gen.G, the LCK Summer champion, by a score of 3-1 in the semifinals.

The Match Review

In the championship match between DRX and T1, old classmates Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok and Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu were placed on opposing sides of the Rift. They both made their debuts around the same time in 2013, but Faker has three championship titles to his name, while the other has none after almost ten years. And now, Deft has partnered with DRX to win his first-ever world championship, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

T1 dominated game one of the final, as Faker led the way with his trademark champion, Azir. Top-laners Lee "Gumayusi" Min-hyeong and Choi "Zeus" Woo-je were having fun with their respective champions, Yone and Varus. The three champions also played a significant role in T1's semifinal victory over JD Gaming last week. In game two, DRX showed no signs of giving up and selected Heimerdinger to help Cho "BeryL" Geon-hee once again and to keep Kim "Zeka" Geon-woo in the mid-laner position on Sylas. This time, the main distinction was that they were on the blue side, allowing them to select Varus first. Support from Ashe and Lux was provided by T1.

T1 began Baron at the 45-minute mark and obtained the Ocean Dragon Soul. However, DRX cleverly approached the 4v4, with Camille from Hwang "Kingen" Seong-hoon entering from the top side and Viego from Hong "Pyosik" Chang-hyeon entering from the other. Deft's Varus, meanwhile, was positioned in the jungle across the river, unharmed throughout the battle, allowing him to deal the most damage. They rushed right down the center to balance the series after taking out four.

The third game was probably the most exciting part of the championship, and T1 had no idea what to expect. In the 24th minute of play, with Smite available and Kalista on their team, jungler Mun "Oner" Hyeon-jun unexpectedly entered the pit and smote it. At that point, DRX was in command of the match and leading in kills. Thanks to the buff, T1 swung the tempo and gold in their favor. DRX committed to the second Baron six minutes later, but Pyosik struck first and once again lacked coordination with Deft. It was stolen a second time by Lee "Gumayusi" Min-Piercing hyeong's Arrow at the very last second.

After that move, League of Legends viewers speculated how disoriented DRX might have felt, but based on their performance; they could maintain their composure. They played the fourth game calmly and steadily. This time, Zeka took control of Azir while Deft continued to play Varus alongside Renata Glasc of BeryL. T1 made a bold move using Soraka support, which was a wise choice during the laning phase. DRX's bot lane was quickly shut down, but Pysoik's Maokai, Kingen's Aatrox, and game-changing ultimates from Zeka propelled them to the series' swiftest victory—a 28:44 victory—despite it.

Even though DRX was down to their last few silver scraps, game five went remarkably in their favor. T1 chose Karma first and transferred two power choices to DRX on red. For the first time in this series, Deft was unbanned, and DRX selected Azir and Caitlyn for her. One of his finest champions is the Piltover Sheriff; the AD carry selection enabled them to defeat Gen.G in the playoffs. DRX took a calculated risk on Hecarim jungle and Bard, two champions who offered more options to access and penetrate the backline, in light of T1's immobile AP carry Viktor and AD carry Varus.

DRX was doing Baron with a numerical advantage at the 20-minute mark when Gumayusi's Varus snuck up to the pit at the last second and blindly stole it with Piercing Arrow. This is a repeat of history. Despite the ups and downs, both teams fought valiantly because they understood how crucial this final game five was. DRX recognized that the appearance of Elder Dragon at the 40th minute signaled their chance to shine with Mountain Dragon Soul. T1 called for Oner to remain in the pit to contest it while their AP and AD carried a teleported bot lane where a minion wave attempted to backdoor into the broken inhibitor.

This time, Pyosik succeeded in achieving the only goal that mattered. Rushing back to defend the base, Zeka and Kingen were successful. The DRX team killed four T1 members in total and triumphed. Kingen received the MVP award in recognition of his series-wide contributions. Deft, 26, reflected on what it meant to him to finally call himself a world champion in the post-game broadcast interview. In the past three years, 2020, 2021, and 2022 BeryL has qualified for the Worlds finals three times and won twice with two different teams, DAMWON Gaming and currently DRX.

A Play-in team never won the title in League of Legends Esports. Previous champions began their campaigns in the Group Stage. At the Chase Centre in San Francisco, the home of the Golden State Warriors NBA team, the championship game was watched by 16,000 spectators.
