Overview:
- Competitive games will be a non-medal event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a surprise U-turn.

Co-sponsored by the Global Esports Federation and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), esports was a test event at the 2022 Birmingham Games (GEF).
Commonwealth Games and their sudden U-turn
The 2026 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee rebuffed repeated demands from BBC News, the CGF, and the GEF to provide specific justifications for the U-turn. We don't know why the committee rejected it since they won't tell us. CGF President Dame Louise Martin expressed her hope during the Birmingham event that having esports in the official schedule will increase enthusiasm from young people who are less interested in conventional sports.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Victoria, Australia, will not include esports. The unexpected change of heart came after esports were tested in the Birmingham-hosted 2022 Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation (GF) and the Global Esports Federation jointly supported the pilot (GEF). The CGF deemed the pilot a success and predicted that esports would be included in future Games. When approached by BBC News, the CGF, GEF, and the organising committee for the 2026 Commonwealth Games all declined to explain the U-turn.
However, a source told the BBC that concerns about doping and, in particular, worries about the need to set up an ongoing, troublesome drug testing procedure played a role in the decision. In professional gaming competitions, the usage of prescription medicines like Adderall to boost performance has often come up as a problem. The CGF and the World Anti-Doping Agency inked a long-term collaboration agreement in July 2022. But none of the 100 participants in the 2022 pilot competition had their drug use evaluated.
