League of Legends is one of the most popular Esports and has always been known for its elaborate tournaments and Championships. Riot Games always makes sure they throw some of the best Championships for their fan base, and it always becomes the best tournament of the year. In today’s blog, we will be getting into some of the best League of Legends tournaments that have taken place to date. Usually, League of Legends tournaments are seen as more like tournaments rather than just for the gameplay and the Esports organisations. One of the major reasons why the Championships are so popular is because of their opening and closing ceremonies.

A List of the Best League of Legends Tournaments

Without wasting much time, let us get into the list of the best League of Legends tournaments over the years:

2021 World Championship

We will start with last year’s World Championship as it was after quite a long time that there was a LAN Championship for League of Legends. What made the Championship so popular was that it was on the verge of being cancelled. The 2021 World Championship was to be held in China. However, quite close to the Championship, China saw a surge in Coronavirus cases, and they had to go on lockdown. This made the situation quite difficult for Riot, as they were quite excited about hosting the Championship in China. However, they postponed the event and decided to host it in Reykjavík, Iceland.

There were a total of 24 teams who had decided to participate in the event. Out of them, only eight teams qualified for the finals. This was quite an intense match, with the best teams going in for the finals. However, fans were quite satisfied with the results. The winner of the 2021 World Championship was  EDward Gaming. In fact, the MVP went to Scout. The runner-ups were DAMWON Gaming, Gen.G Esports, and T1. The average number of viewers for the Championship was 1 298 219, and the majority of the views was 4 018 728, which was calculated for the Finals.

2019 World Championship

This was the last World Championship for League of Legends that had been held quite grandly, with a grand opening ceremony that is still fondly remembered by the League of Legends community, to this day. The whole event was held in Europe, and the Grand Finals were held in Paris. It was quite an event that one had to be present for if they wanted to get the full feel of it. As it was pre-Pandemic, there were many more people in the audience for the event, than what Riot allows now. However, it still managed to get a good number of viewers when it was broadcast live too!

It had recorded an average number of views of 1 042 341, and the maximum number of viewers was recorded to be 3 985 787, which was recorded during the Grand Finals. Of course, nobody wanted to miss the Grand Finals which had some of the best teams, and no one was sure who was going to take the trophy back to their home. The 2019 World Championship was won by FunPlus Phoenix, who was quite a popular team in League of Legends back then. The runner-ups were G2 Esports, Invictus Gaming, and SK Telecom T1.

2020 World Championship

Riot wanted to celebrate the 2020 World Championship in a grander way than it had actually happened. The Championship was to mark the 10-year anniversary of League of Legends. However, the Pandemic had hit, and all their plans had gone to waste. However, that did not stop them from holding a LAN event. They had decided to host the Championship in China so that at least they could celebrate it in a smaller way. Most of the teams had to be flown into the country to get to the event. Some of the teams had to opt out as some of their members had gotten COVID during the time. Yet, the Championship was quite a successful one.

The average number of viewers was recorded as 1 113 702, and the maximum number of viewers was calculated on the Finals where it was recorded at 3 882 252. The winner of the 2020 World Championship was DAMWON. The runner-ups were Suning, G2 Esports, and Top Esports. G2 Esports has been attempting to climb the rankings for the longest time for whatever reason.

Mid-Season Invitational 2022

The MSI Invitational was another massive tournament held in 2022, that was extremely awaited by the League of Legends community as Riot Games would be inviting certain popular Esports teams to compete against each other in the League of Legends tournament. This was quite different from the usual tournaments and Championships held. Also, this was the biggest tournament held after all the World Championships were done within the COVID strict restrictions. Despite the fact that they were LAN events, the real show began with the MSI 2022.
