Augustana will study the eye movements of Esports players
Head coach Joe Loomis said it would be fully implemented for the team by the end of February.
Overview:
- Understanding how athletes’ bodies and minds react in real time during gameplay is important for success.
- Curia CEO Alex Milenkovic describes the technology as "self-training" for Esports athletes, comparing it to football teams reviewing the tape.
The Augustana College Vikings Esports squad will combine competitive gaming and scientific technology and employ biometrics to measure and evaluate players' physical and mental performance while they play.

In collaboration with global biometric solutions provider Curia, the biometric technology will enable coaches to build more effective training and performance-enhancing techniques for the squad.
The team's head coach Joe Loomis said it would be completely implemented by the end of February. He believes understanding how players' bodies and brains respond in real-time during gameplay is critical for success.

"We're extremely focused on eye tracking... we can compare it to their decision-making in video review with players and with the team," he said. "We're also looking at pupil dilation; when someone is engaged, their pupils dilate. We detect a decrease in pupil size as they get less involved, and we can tell not just where they're looking but also how engaged they are at any one time during the game."
Curia CEO Alex Milenkovic compares the technology to football teams studying footage as a kind of "self-training" for Esports players.
"Biometric monitoring and eye tracking allow you to see how someone does their tasks. What are outstanding players looking at on a team, and can we educate the other members of the squad to do the same? "He said. "You may look back at what a player did throughout a match. The second step is to create a profile of your body's reactions and determine how you may use that knowledge to gain a competitive advantage."
According to Milenkovic, Curia's eye trackers look like miniature infrared bars and sit underneath a computer display, shooting infrared light into players' eyes. John Bolton, a sophomore on the squad, is looking forward to incorporating new technologies into his game. "I'm excited to have all of the data to show me what areas of the game I'm least or most focused on," he added. "Or whether I'm up or behind in the game, what changed?"
Bolton debuted his college Esports this season, coming second in the national Eastern Collegiate Athletics Conference for his game championship, NBA2K. "I believe this new technology will benefit not just myself, but everyone on the team," he stated. "That will improve our programme as a whole."
According to Loomis, senior Research students from Augie's data analytics programme will collaborate with the Esports squad to transform the data obtained into "useful" information, such as biometric profiles for each Vikings player. "Traditional sports have long used biometric and wearable technologies," he said. "We'll be using eye tracking, heart rate, EGG data, and sweat to collect information in order to design a practise plan for success."
In August, the Vikings announced a health and wellness partnership with FITGMR, an Esports performance and player development organisation. The curriculum includes a performance-tracking tool and materials tailored to Esports athletes’ and gamers' mental and physical needs.
Loomis intends to include additional biometric technologies in the future. The Vikings Esports team won two championship-level conference games to cap off its first varsity season.
