How did Fortnite manage to beat the top players in the gaming & E-sports industry like League of Legends & PUBG

Fortnite was teased for the first time in 2011 at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, as “a world where you explore, you scavenge, you build, and ultimately you survive.” Sounds fascinating, right? The game was finally launched in 2017 and it’s surprising to note that by the end of its first month, Fortnite was able to sell over 500k digital copies & during the game’s first year, over 100 million players played the game globally. Now, what were the reasons for such huge traffic in the first year itself? We’ve studied the strategies & opportunities used by the Epic Games, the developers of the game to make it one of the biggest games worldwide and you’ll be unveiling them throughout the blog. You’ll also get to know how Fortnite contributed well to the E-sports industry.

Fortnite is an online video game that is available in three different versions, all of which have unique & appealing features which made the game stand out.

Fortnite is a different world you travel to once you start playing, a world full of experiences. You may drop on an island and fight to stay till the end & win. You may hang out with friends to catch a movie or a concert, which is again a version by Fortnite. Want to live in a world you made & now you rule? Again, a version of Fortnite. Lastly, if you find your interest in rescuing the world of Zombies or Monsters, Fortnite gets you covered. The range of experiences covered by Fortnite is immense and likely is the response received by the game.

If we talk about the Game Modes, there are namely four:

  1. Battle Royale: Hop off the Battle Bus & compete to stay standing on the ground. It’s a free-to-play version where you can build, slash & conquer, individually or in a team. There’s never an end to the fun for this game because there’s always something left to explore.
  2. Party Royale: A chill & fun mode within the Battle Royale Mode. It’s the zone where you don’t need to care about the kills & slaughters, you can just have FUN! You’ll also be witnessing boat races, movies, and even live concerts from top artists!
  3. Creative: Want to create the game of your dreams? Build your dream island with your dream game & invite your friends over. The perfect place to get your artistic side out! Also, when you don’t feel like building your island, you may crash on your friends’ creations.
  4. Save The World: The last mode offered by Fortnite is a pay-to-play version. To save the world will be your goal if you play this version because you’ll be battling against monsters, better known as Husks. You get stronger throughout by finding loot, crafting weapons, and expanding your collection of Heroes.

With these diverse versions/modes, Fortnite really stood out. Epic Games met all the requirements of the gamers, ‘a multipurpose gaming world’ indeed. No one had explored so much for the gamers but the developers: Epic Games knew what was needed & hence the immense success that was bestowed on Fortnite.

Yes, Fortnite did pretty well while it was released but its popularity was surpassed by that of a Steam title called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, commonly called PUBG. PUBG used to follow a battle royale concept inspired by the ‘2000 Japanese film Battle Royale’ in which the objective was to remain the last person/team standing on the ground. Fortnite imitated this concept and thus got into this market of Battle Royale games, thus drawing more audience. Well, we learn from this that no matter how well you’re doing, it’s important to stay up to the trends & be relevant. This will always help the company or organization evolve, irrespective of the expertise.

Cross-Platform Play Capability.

While ‘Save The World’ was launched for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, Battle Royale and Creative were released for all those platforms, and also for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices. The game was also launched with the release of the next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Unlike other games, Fortnite had this facility that you could play any version through any combination of cross-platform( just except allowing people playing on Xbox and PlayStation to play against each other). This one factor contributed to the game’s growth abundantly because there were now ‘NO BARRIERS SET’!

The Fortnite World Cup & E-sports.

A world cup dedicated to a game itself. Huge. Ain’t it? Well, it is said that the Fortnite World Cup event attracted millions of users & viewers & hence got great profit. The launch of the Fortnite World Cup for the first time in history signified the occurrence of E-sports in the mainstream for real. Fortnite gave an enormously strong, needed push to the E-sports industry because before this World Cup happened, E-sports was an industry of uncertainty. During the first Fortnite World Cup held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York, a total US$30 million prize pool was available across the various competitions. The event turned eight pro gamers into instant millionaires, and the biggest winner was only 16 years old, hence the visibility of building a great career through E-sports Tournaments.

Influence of the Game Worldwide.

To build a game that is loved globally must’ve been a bit difficult task but Epic Games left no stone unturned even in this genre. Even after all these years, Fortnite’s popularity is not at all decreasing but always increasing. At any given time, the game has more than two million concurrent players. It is the most loved game in over 106 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It’s also extremely loved in Europe and only a few countries don’t have it as the most popular game, namely: Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia.

Twitch Popularity.

We wouldn’t say that there were no good games before Fortnite getting streamed on Twitch because League Of Legends had already set the records. We’d say that League Of Legends gave birth to Twitch. The popularity of a game cannot be judged by noticing how many players are streaming the game but by whom the game is being streamed. Fortnite surpassed the popularity of League Of Legends not for a day but for a pretty long period which got the game even more popular from the gaming community. It was when Drake joined Twitch’s most famous streamer, ‘Ninja’ that the Internet broke & the next day, the mainstream media was flooded with any & every story they could find about Fortnite, fundamentally due to Drake’s popularity.

Offering Free-to-play as well as Pay-to-win Modes.

Due to the distinct versions of the game, the developers made it clear to the world that they will face lag neither from the monetary aspects nor through the audience rush because all types of users were welcome at Fortnite. Big Brain Time, for sure! The users interested in fair gameplays could participate in the Free-to-play versions where the game was fair for everyone as in ‘Battle Royale’ & ‘Creative’ modes. While the users interested in the pay-to-win games could participate in the ‘Save The World’ mode. The variety & distinctiveness of the game really set the standards high. Not only this but there were also In-Game Purchases: from where the majority of revenue came in. The gamers purchased V-bucks, which were then used to make digital purchases within the game. Basically, Epic Games killed the competition through its strategies & uniqueness.
