Newsroom Aug 29, 2022

The Commonwealth Esports Championship is an international event held between national teams during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Overview:

  • The Commonwealth Esports Championship is an international event held between national teams during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, supported by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
  • The event is between 3 games, Rocket League, eFootball and DOTA 2.
  • The Commonwealth Esports Championship will occur in Birmingham, England, at the International Convention Centre.

In 2022, India took the bronze medal in the Dota 2 open division at the first Commonwealth Esports championships in Birmingham, UK. In a best-of-three game for the bronze medal at the International Convention Centre, the Indian Esports team captain Moin Ejaz, Ketan Goyal, Abhishek Yadav, Shubhnam Goli, and Vishal Vernekar bested New Zealand 2-0.

They dedicate this victory to this nation, symbolizing the team's years of dedication and hard work. They are quite happy as a squad since the Commonwealth Games gold was a dream come true for us, said, captain Moin Ejaz. They hope the victory will inspire additional Dota 2 and other Esports competitions, enabling the ecosystem as a whole to develop the nation.

To go to the semifinals, when they were defeated by eventual winners Malaysia, India defeated Wales in the group stages and fell to England in the semifinals. The Commonwealth esports championships served as a demonstration event for the Commonwealth Games 2022. It was not a competition for CWG medals. A women's and an open category for each of the three games, Rocket League, eFootball, and Dota 2, was played.

Another Indian squad participated in the Rocket League open division but was eliminated in the group round. The most successful team was Malaysia, which took home three gold medals. England, Wales, and Northern Ireland each earned one gold medal.

On August 6-7, 2022, Birmingham's International Convention Centre (ICC) will host the Commonwealth Esports Championships. Twelve countries have advanced to the finals after Nottingham-based qualifying events. Teams from Wales, Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland will compete with more than 100 competitors.

Could Esports be included officially in the Commonwealth Games in future?

The inclusion of Esports in a non-Esporting event is not new. Ten Esports titles were aired at the 2022 Asian Games in May, while esports were first included during the Southeast Asian Games in 2019. The fact that it would appeal to a younger audience is one of the arguments favour including it. According to the Commonwealth Games Federation data, those aged 16 to 24 are more likely to watch Esports competitions (32%) than conventional sports competitions (31%), and 44% watch live video game streaming.

By the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Esports should be a standard component of the competition, according to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
