This Huge Video Game Actually Got Released Ahead of Schedule

Why did Nintendo release it early?

In the gaming industry, where logistic and artistic obstacles make precise scheduling practically impossible, delays are widespread. It's unusual for a game to be released ahead of schedule.

However, Nintendo Co. is an exception to the rule, revealing this week that the new game Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be released on July 29, two months ahead of schedule.

Typically, game developers squeeze every last second out of their schedule, working until the very last minute to repair problems and prepare for a "day-one patch" that would handle any remaining difficulties. If a game is completed early, the chances are that its creators will spend as much time as possible trying to improve it.

Over the last few decades, there have been a few instances where a game was launched earlier than expected. However, it normally just takes a few days or weeks.

Last year, the multiplayer section of Halo Infinite, for example, was released two weeks early. Brink, a 2011 shooter from Bethesda, was published a week early than scheduled. Assassin's Creed IV by Ubisoft Entertainment SA was released a few days early in 2012. Sifu, an independent game, was supposed to be released on February 22, 2022, but instead arrived on February 8, 2022.

Capcom Co.'s Resident Evil 6, which was bumped forward by around a month and a half in late 2012, was another uncommon instance of a big game getting an early release like Xenoblade. Its creators claimed "fan reaction" as their motivation for releasing the game early. "As a result of that, we made the decision to get this game into people's hands as fast as possible," one producer explained.

They could have been better off keeping the extra time. Resident Evil 6 received mixed reviews, with one critic describing the game as "a horrible imitation of modern-day action games."

Big games, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, are sometimes pushed up behind the scenes. Call of Duty games are generally published in November, but this was pushed back to October 12 due to Activision Blizzard Inc. officials wanting to avoid the Oct. 26 release of Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2.

Then there was Five Nights at Freddy's 4, the fourth entry in the popular indie horror game series, which was supposed to be released on October 31, 2015, but was instead released on July 23. Three months is the longest gap I've discovered, at least as far as it's been made public.

Nintendo's decision to publish Xenoblade Chronicles 3 so early is unclear. Nintendo, however, manages its own ecosystem and distributes new titles for it every month, unlike most other gaming firms. It can be more adaptable than a studio that only produces one or two hits every year.

Scheduling shuffles are the most plausible explanation. Splatoon 3, one of Nintendo's other big 2022 releases, will be released on September 9th, according to the company's announcement on Friday. That matchup had already been planned for this summer.
